KAUTOKEINO-OPPRØRET

Country: Norway
Language: Norwegian

Distributor: Norwegian Film Institute
Director: Nils Gaup

An ice-cold drama with fire in its belly, this tale of revolution in the most remote part of Norway is a visual masterpiece.

It is 1852 and modernisation is about to enter the desolate village of Kautokeino, inhabited for centuries by the native Sami population and their reindeers. The ruthless and prosperous Swedish liquor store owner Ruth (Mikael Persbrandt) rules the roost with his steady supply of alcohol to the local men, leaving the herds neglected and the women bitter.

When strong-willed Elen (Anni-Kristiina Juuso) refuses to shop at the store that keeps her husband drunk, she sets in motion a serious of events that will lead to one of the most dramatic episodes in northern Scandinavian history.

Based on a true story, and 10 years in the making, this beautiful film is one of Norway’s finest.
