In this much talked-about drama, the blissful mood of a young couple’s backpacking adventure through the Caucasus Mountains turns on an incredible moment.
In their thirties and about to be married Alex (Gael Garcia Bernal) and Nica (Hani Furstenburg) hire a guide to take them through the beautiful and frequently ominous mountains of Georgia. As they get further from civilization and learn more about the man who is leading them, their childish and naïve ways seem to become more and more out of place. It’s in this atmosphere that writer/director Julia Loktev (working from a story originally by Ernest Hemmingway) inserts an incident of such simplicity and damage that no-one’s life will be the same. With a highly naturalistic aesthetic, and three riveting performances, you will be left wondering what you would have done had the same thing happened to you.
